The excess death data in NYC is so so upsetting and staggering and still isn't, as far as I know, being integrated into the official counts.

I heard they had been instructed not to test non-hospitalized fatalities like this

So, in a way, almost all are deaths resulting from the covid pandemic. They should be counted as such. We could speak of direct and indirect deaths.
-
they are direct, diagnosed in the absence of tests and put on the death certificate

Good point. Given lower mortality from other causes due to distancing, there's an even greater number unaccounted for, compared to previous years.

Good point. I hadn't thought of the minus category which will complicate the year over years analysis. In SF I hear no ambulances near hospital. Accidents are down while corona is moderate/almost under control (for now).

Some portion are undoubtedly attributable to COVID-19. But since the excess deaths being discussed are those found/reported dead at home, how many of these would have happened in public (ie at work, the gym, the store, etc) if social distancing wasn’t in place?
-
I wonder if that is tracked. No idea whether it would be negligible or significant.
