Prime example of false security of a mask. This TX state trooper might have an N95—can’t tell—so nose & mouth maybe protected. But his eyes aren’t & gloved hand on his leg is problem. He shld NOT be that close to driver. We have more evidence for #socialdistancing than #Masks4Allpic.twitter.com/MdOLmkxG2c

On the contrary, that picture is a strong argument *for* how important masks are because he would be doing the same thing without a mask if we hadn't managed to win this argument with facts and science! You've been failing to understand how risk-compensation does & doesn't work.

There are things to understand better about masks, but it's almost amusing to see people cling to the most speculative things with no evidence. There is nothing wrong with being wrong; health authorities were wrong. But it's human nature to not let go for a while, I guess.

Not sure if you’re speaking specifically about me not being able to “be wrong,” but anyone who’s followed me can tell you I *always* make it clear when I’m wrong & I correct. I have no prob w being wrong. I have a prob w overstating evidence & oversimplifying complex issues.

False security argument in this context isn't adding complexity because it has no evidence, and if anything, the signaling power of masks in a pandemic for more alert behavior has more face-value validity from similar events. So it's wrong. "Complexity" needs to be appropriate.

This *is* an example of false security. It does not mean we shouldn’t we wearing masks. It means we need better education & emphasis of the basics that work if we’re going to be using them.

He'd be doing the same thing without masks, because a week ago that's what most everyone had been doing! My own grocery store went from 10 percent to 60 percent masks in a week! I'm glad he at least has a mask on. Yeah, he should stay away.

I think we can agree that your observations and mine are equally unlikely to be reliable empirical evidence. And that’s ok.

Decades of "false security" arguments and literature against every safety device introduced or tested, so I'm going to go with nope, they're not equal. I'll agree it IS something to keep an eye out for but literature supports masks as caution signals more than risk-compensation.

We also have decades of research on how the precautionary principle can cause harm. Again, it goes both ways.
