I would also gently suggest it’s time to end the assumption that interventions have benefit when we don’t know. A treatment can have potential benefit & potential harm. It’s often more complicated than we think. We do know that harm is systematically under reported @JeanneLenzer1

That goes both ways. I would gently assert that for months the messaging by most experts was that interventions like masks cause harm when there was no evidence. A single photo of a trooper not social distancing is not proof of anything other than confirmation bias.

I only speak for myself not most experts. You could direct your comment to them. My position has remained the same...I don’t know. The picture was an example of potential harm.

The way to assure that the general public correctly uses PPE is by educating them on best practices. This should be done the same way correct hand washing protocols have been communicated. The assumption that people are not capable of correct usage is elitist nonsense.

I agree with education (I’m a prof at university) I’ve not assumed people are not capable. What is your recommendation on mask wearing by asymptomatic ppl in public to prevent transmission of clinical #covid19 disease? Please cite the evidence that informs you position?

This thread by @zeynep addresses the arguments against asymptomatic use nicely: https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1247159204156043267?s=20 … Jeremy's website has a large collection of the studies that support universal mask wearing.https://twitter.com/jeremyphoward/status/1245074711702319104?s=20 …

Thank you. Please pick the best citation to support the specific claim that masks worn by asymptomatic people in public can prevent transmission of clinical disease of #covid19.

You can’t prove a negative. The burden of proof goes in the other direction. And no one is trying to prove they *don’t* work. It’s that we need proof that their benefit exceeds their risks.

Show evidence of their risks. People have made the same argument for motorcycle helmet, seat-belts and many many things that increase safety. Preponderance of evidence of widespread benefit, yet to see a single good study for real harm or evidence of risk compensation.

I haven’t claimed there is solid evidence of risks. There is theoretical evidence—just as we don’t have solid evidence of their benefits. (Yes, I’ve read ALL those studies.) the question is the net balance. It’s an open question. I’m fine w the rec to wear masks.

My job isn’t to make recs/set policy. My job is to communicate recs & policy and to communicate the science behind them, incl what we do & don’t know. Ppl can hate me for saying this is complicated if they want, but I can’t change the science.
