I'm getting questions about well-meaning medical worker threads with strict instructions on mask-wearing, implying if you don't do everything right, you endanger yourself. That advice is very true for medical workers, but it's bit of misunderstanding of universal masks. Thread

I hope you are right. I’m a microbiology prof & a few days ago would have agreed 100%, but what I’ve seen the last few days (used masks all over the bike trail, people with masks ignoring the 6ft lines, et cetera). If we think of others in addition to self I’m all for masks.

That is absolutely something we should be on the lookout for! This is what I fear with lack of trust—people were told falsely that masks don't work at all, and maybe now it's harder to communicate the nuance that they really help dampen spread but aren't magic wands.

"no evidence of that" - you know what that sounds like, don't you? of course people are going to substitute masks for other precautions. who doesn't substitute one precaution for another through some arbitrary, inane calculus?

The yaren't pushing masks for th eUK because A/they haven't got any and B/they cost money. My friend in Spain says they give the out free at pharmacies.
