Of course. Indoors is very conducive to infections spreading. We must provide least risk places for people to get fresh air. Us not seeing them congregate doesn't mean they won't just do it indoors. We need cooperation, not feel-good top-down authority. https://twitter.com/RealDemVoter1/status/1246789342795890688 …

NYC is tacitly saying car traffic and parking spots are more important than human lives. It needs lots of car-free streets, stat.

This may be relevant; I came across it a few years ago when putting together a simplistic aerosol disease transmission model https://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/natural_ventilation.pdf …

According to Google’s mobility data Finland has seen +48% increase in park visits during the crisis. Mostly enough room to keep safe distances. Restaurants etc closed, but we don’t have a general curfew and fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that.

parks in Zurich closed, presumably b/c ppl here congregate in them a lot; perhaps have serious fines for that; but yeah, not great for everyone to be on narrow sidewalks esp w/joggers who rarely give you 2m distance

Ventilation/sun/outdoors are important for infection control, agreed. But how exactly is mandatory social distancing going to be monitored/implemented in big open public spaces? Who's going to mark out 6-ft boxes in a park? Who'll monitor that people adhere?

I’m so happy you’re writing about this! Performative park closures - generally driven not by scientific or medical experts, but by local officials and exasperated laypeople - have been driving me crazy and I’m relieved you’ll be tackling the topic

Make it possible to distance outdoors, not trap people indoors. In a few years, academics will be publishing studies on how the locales with sane access to outdoors did so much better. Don't be the comparison case.
