Wait, what? What's the context for this call? Weirdly, I know COBOL. Eons ago, I learned it for a job that was fairly lucrative, well, for my very broke self. This call is right next to my dream of volunteering to do an emergency lit review when they call for a doctor on board.https://twitter.com/manicode/status/1246497036389793792 …

The governor of New Jersey just put out the call on live TV that he is desperate for Cobol programmers right now.

It's too bad I only learned FORTRAN, out of all the Ancient Languages!

I knew FORTRAN, too. Long story, but actually the same story as COBOL. It's the kind of thing you made reasonable money in in Istanbul back then! (Ancient systems!)

Most climate and weather models still run on Fortan. It’s fast as stink and has been modernized quite a bit!

Yep; I got to use *modern* FORTRAN on a supercomputer a few years ago. This, however -- this was 1970s mainframe FORTRAN.

I did that once, too! Surprising that Rod Sterling did not jump out from behind the tape reels! Also, I was surprised how good some of that ancient code was.

ouch! Thankfully missed that era. From what I heard, code had to written very cleverly to manage limited memory, which made it extremely difficult to read/debug.

Assembly, C, sure. COBOL is kinda... COBOL. It's not hard to learn, look up some code and you'll see. Most COBOL code I saw was pretty straightforward.

          - no internet or Google --> had to know language really well - very limited memory --> had to be super efficient - shared computers --> had to debug by hand + wait for the computer There are so many borderline legendary stories about eking more efficiency out with old code.
