I always wonder if people were actually at risk of infecting themselves while incorrectly handling masks - weren’t there aerosols in the first place that would have been inhaled without those masks? (Ignoring the primary effect of protecting others...)

If you are a medical worker handling SARS or Ebola patients, yes, sure known doffing risks. But none of those apply whatsoever to a "no mask" comparison, and do not apply to the general public. Good to educate public on sanitization but yeah, "but the harm" stuff is incoherent.
