I have never held back criticizing any institution I worked for. Not once. Not as an academic either. I criticize NYT all the time, and argue with Atlantic writers! Go ahead! But okay, defensiveness is human; that's why figuring out what went wrong has to be policy like NTSB.

Thank you! That said, while I thought I might be ending my public writing career, I wasn't going to be homeless. I hope I would have done it even if those were the stakes, but it's very human to avoid such risks. That's why we should institutionally protect critical thinking.

I wonder if this is an issue with Vox's model. It doesn't really have much of an opening for investigative reporting - someone needed to actually dig into this to figure out what was going on.

Matt is smart and inclined to see the odd contradictions (per his tweet) but it would have needed a lot more time and effort to actually unpick it in a way that goes much beyond that.
