More and more countries are accepting the overwhelming evidence and science that we clearly need universal mask wearing to combat a respiratory infection with asymptomatic spread. The sooner the better: first home-made, then ramped up domestic production.https://twitter.com/alanwongw/status/1244945031867166721 …

Just adding this here. Also reminder that a peer-reviewed publication looking at what worked for SARS, same family as COVID, found that *masks* were the most effective intervention—better than hand-washing. Keep washing hands and distance though! Need all!https://twitter.com/jeremyphoward/status/1242894386469486592 …

Jeremy Howard @jeremyphowardWhat's happening here? Does this masks thing really make sense, scientifically? Yes, it does! Here's 34 scientific papers that all point to the same thing: masks (even home made ones) really work to dramatically reduce the spread of covid-19. http://tiny.cc/maskswork pic.twitter.com/RQsvq9ezX0Show this thread2 replies 85 retweets 153 likesShow this thread -

We should've ramped up national production in January, distributing N95s to hospitals and surgical masks to people like Taiwan did. Only three *total* deaths in Taiwan as of today, despite extensive travel to China before. But here we are. Let's start now.https://twitter.com/ryanstruyk/status/1244990603525570560 …

Yes, I've been trying to make that point for weeks. Distributing some masks now: fewer intubations in three weeks. Each intubation has massive need for PPE compared to that mask. The trick is managing the transition without depriving medical workers now.https://twitter.com/litwicki/status/1245038781700272128 …

Terrícola por accidente @litwickiReplying to @zeynepThey just don't seem to get that if more people *outside* of hospitals were wearing masks, there would be fewer people *inside* hospitals. Holding back all the masks only for healthcare workers only ensures hospitals will be more overwhelmed & healthcare workers more at risk.2 replies 21 retweets 67 likesShow this thread -

On the one hand, thank you. On the other hand, it was a hard piece to write, personally (a lot of risk). On the other other hand, the science was clear and media should challenge authorities when/if the science/facts warrant it. Otherwise what's the point?https://twitter.com/juicemoorthy/status/1245043144678244352 …

Arjun Moorthy @juicemoorthyI've been a fan of@zeynep since before Twitter and Tear Gas. Here she rightly calls out the WHO and CDC for improper guidance on masks, though she could have also called out the media more generally for not questioning the guidance when plenty of data to the contrary. https://twitter.com/thefactualnews/status/1245038735340621824 …Show this thread4 replies 7 retweets 69 likesShow this thread -

Having spent the better part of a week reading articles on masks to write The Factual's article, I have to say I greatly appreciate the risk you took and commend you for the incisive way you captured the divergent truths on masks! Excellently written!

Thank you. It really was an uphill climb to get that message out but I think we are way past that point, and now onward to making universal mask wearing happen.

Btw do you happen to have a list of the mask articles that came out until March 17?
I was quite frustrated by the lack of scientific scrutiny and mere parroting of CDC/WHO while ignoring credible and successful health authorities/scientists elsewhere. But did not keep a list.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -

I had friends blocking people for "questioning science" by disagreeing with the CDC/WHO guidelines for masks

Yeah. It's particularly disappointing that we didn't have a few journalists actually dig into the science of it.
