The information I recall hearing from the beginning on masks is that it would be better if everyone wore a mask, but that due to a global supply shortage, it was important for high exposure risks — healthcare, grocery clerks, etc — have them, rather than the general population. ?

That’s been my understanding. But some of messages (in the U.S. at least) have been conflicting. In particular, we repeatedly heard recommendations for regular people not to use N95s (w/ the rationale that we wouldn’t be able to wear them correctly, so they would be worthless).

Incorrectly worn N95s aren't worthless, just not N95-level protection. The problem with N95s is that they get more uncomfortable compared to regular surgical masks *and* if you really need them to work as N95s (high-risk situation/medical setting) yeah training is good.

Also medical people really need N95s because they are doing procedures that aerosolize (like intubation) and there, yeah, N95 or you get infected. But even in Hong Kong, which has tons of experience, they wear surgical masks outside of high-risk stuff. So surgical mask is fine.

@zeynep Do you know of a recent article questioning early recommendations in the U.S. against mask wearing? I’m looking for a citation for a piece I’m writing. Thanks!2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

You expected the major health authorities to be misinforming us at this scale? I sure had not.

Then why don’t you point out where I said nobody knew about misinformation from authorities in some abstract sense versus people are still not realizing the scale and scope of misinformation from authorities in this case.

this is a counterproductive argument, we're talking past each other. i was also thinking of the older thread ab media misinformation. no one that I've seen write on social media misinfo has diminished presence/prevalence of institutional or media failings. it's an ecosystem.pic.twitter.com/iKYanUmOUF

As I said, if you expected major health authorities would be major sources of misinformation on key issues during a deadly pandemic, and if you believe that this is fairly common knowledge, all I can say is that I did not and I don't think people have grappled with this at all.

And yeah I know about ecosystems, thanks.
