why can't vox just say "relying on experts we downplayed the coronavirus a few months ago. if we knew then what we know now i would have written the story differently. and next time we'll cast my net for a wider array of experts"

i think a lot of reporters are stuck on the fact that vox accurately relayed what experts were saying at the time. but clearly that got them in the wrong place and there were experts then who thought differently

I'm sorry but there is enormous denial in US media. Yes, US health authorities also had a complacent message, but the role of journalism is to investigate and give us an in-depth perspective. There were great pieces of journalism. There were credible experts who were correct. +

It wasn't just Vox tweeting, with a confidence that shocked me, that this would not become a deadly global pandemic long past it was clear that it would, but that despite a lot of amazing investigative pieces that made the issue clear, they kept amplifying the complacent message.

If the defense is "well, the authorities were also complacent", they what is the justification for opinion/explainer journalism? What is the point of the amazing reporting that did come out of the newsrooms on this? Authorities can tweet themselves. Journalists need to add value.

The only thing that bothers me is that I don't want to pick on one outlet. Chill, don't panic, what about the flu, travel bans are racist (without explaining banners can be racist while we still needed severe travel bans) etc. was so commonplace in February. Need self-reflection.
