I have a running list. Masks are the worst. It's so wrong that it will go down in history. So, WHO misinformed us on human-to-human and asymptomatic transmission. That's how we got a pandemic. WHO misinformed us on travel bans. That was insanely wrong, too.

CDC misinformation has helped turn this into a terrible epidemic in NYC, with masks leading the top. It's not a marginal issue. It's perhaps the number one tool in the arsenal. CDC just issued a bullshit advisory targeting only NYC/NJ after Trump quarrel with Coumo.

(Mask misinformation, by the way, is one key reason why nursing homes have outbreaks).

In general, I think the academic field of misinformation is fighting the last war. Social media disinformation is real, but nothing compared to the WHO/CDC crisis which will go down in history as one of the biggest failures in their history, if not the biggest.

(You'll note I'm not mentioning Trump admin misinformation! That's a whole other ball of wax.) The stuff on masks is honestly Saddam had WMD level misinformation. Health authorities in Hong Kong or Taiwan aren't idiots and the evidence is not even complicated.

The information I recall hearing from the beginning on masks is that it would be better if everyone wore a mask, but that due to a global supply shortage, it was important for high exposure risks — healthcare, grocery clerks, etc — have them, rather than the general population. ?

That’s been my understanding. But some of messages (in the U.S. at least) have been conflicting. In particular, we repeatedly heard recommendations for regular people not to use N95s (w/ the rationale that we wouldn’t be able to wear them correctly, so they would be worthless).

Incorrectly worn N95s aren't worthless, just not N95-level protection. The problem with N95s is that they get more uncomfortable compared to regular surgical masks *and* if you really need them to work as N95s (high-risk situation/medical setting) yeah training is good.

Also medical people really need N95s because they are doing procedures that aerosolize (like intubation) and there, yeah, N95 or you get infected. But even in Hong Kong, which has tons of experience, they wear surgical masks outside of high-risk stuff. So surgical mask is fine.

Agree. Surgical mask is fine for just going out to get groceries, etc. Will help prevent a person from infecting others, should they be unwittingly carrying the virus. Premium on N95s means they should be allotted to those in high risk fields during this pandemic, like HCW.

OK, so we've just listed some recent studies. But what might have caught your attention is this intriguing graph markup by @jperla. Look at the 'mask countries' vs the 'no mask' countries. 10/15: pic.twitter.com/3WmiHrGzQS
