To the heartless people complaining US might have sent some ventilators to China at the peak of their epidemic. You'd rather have people in China die of lack of ventilators when we weren't yet hit? Not just heartless but stupid because of the below. Ventilators should go to need.https://twitter.com/lumiere2016/status/1244323105272500224 …

I've never minced words about the culpability of the Chinese gov't. See thread below for some of my writings. But the idea it was wrong to send ventilators when they were desperately needed for the people of China is callous, opportunistic rage peddling.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1240304017407979525 …

They were censored and punished. Some died. Unconscionably, Chinese authorities suppressed the info and WHO parroted their line into January. https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1217043229427761152 …Show this thread4 replies 20 retweets 97 likesShow this thread -

We're talking about ventilators. There is no shortage of things the administration is doing terribly wrong. Within countries and globally, ventilators need to move and go to peak need. They are not PPE. They can be reused, but are in short supply.https://twitter.com/brook_jaymes/status/1244326260073005056 …

Shipments left on February 7th. Two weeks before virus hit here. It is not defensible to send away 18 tons of protective gear 2 wks before it hits here.3 replies 3 retweets 31 likesShow this thread -

I'm on the hold the government of China responsible for unleashing the pandemic in the first place camp. Their current misinformation campaign is disgusting. Check my thread above. It's still the right thing to send ventilators to peak epidemic places.https://twitter.com/TbBrame/status/1244327962972844032 …

I am mad, too. Our lack of preparation is inexcusable. It’s also still true helping other countries contain their own epidemic is what we have to do to protect ourselves. I don’t think I’m soft on either government here. They both failed terribly.https://twitter.com/eileenserra/status/1244333119475314688 …

Plus most PPE is made in China. We had no plan to help them then rebuild our supply, esp since the virus was already here then. Instead, we paid China once, sent PPE back to them, and now are paying super inflated rates to buy new supplies. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/kenbensinger/everyone-is-looking-for-coronavirus-protective-masks-some …

We should have distributed remaining PPE based on simulation scenarios, and converted manufacturing here to make PPE back in Jan/Feb. Could have rallied as “America saves the world” or whatever MAGA slogan helped people understand the seriousness of all this.

We’re really both on the side that people should be helped and there were missed opportunities everywhere. So now, we do what we can to keep ourselves and communities healthy, and help people get elected who will fix the rest.

I don't disagree. But we should never demonize helping areas with peaking epidemics. That's how you get pandemics. I don't at all excuse China.

It’s not the help to China that people are demonizing. It’s the lack of follow through on this side. I think most people would want to help anyone, and also create PPE production here for us and the rest of the world.
