Not wearing masks is exponentially increasing the pileup at the hospitals, putting health care workers more at risk. We can manage the transition through rationing. Everyone would’ve been better off from the start if this had been the recommendation—with rationed distribution.

They're also dying because more people are infected than needed to have been because of this anti-mask guidance.

I agree with @waltshaub. I am a medical assistant in clinic setting inches away leaning over pts taking temps, vitals, assessing while they’re talking and coughing, all the while they’re denying symptoms. This is every day. Masks for us are essential.

I don't think anyone is/has asserted that they're not. The argument is that ONLY providing them to healthcare workers serves to increase the danger to those same healthcare workers by ensuring that more people are infected and have to be hospitalized. Masks work to prevent inf.

2/2 otherwise they are essentially useless once they get damp from wearing around. In this particular outbreak -droplet,airborne and contact disease- I don’t think wearing a mask around protects people like you are thinking it does.

You can make the same arguments about hand-washing. I'm gonna go with if people in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China can so successfully manage this, and we can talk to Americans on how to wash their hands correctly, we can do this.

I’m definitely not arguing about hand washing - if anything this has taught people how essential that is anyway. But, part of the success in these countries containing covid was swift across the board testing which we did not and still don’t have. We don’t have a nat’l protocol.

Japan isn’t testing (and probably has more cases than they realize) and isn’t properly isolating but does have widespread mask use. Their doctors and nurses aren’t dying in droves like in Lombardy.

What about all the cloth masks being sewn enmasse by volunteers? Could civilian use of those or similar face covering make an impact without disrupting PPE for providers?
