Neither the CDC nor WHO recommend wearing of masks except for those that are sick. There is little evidence of a benefit of use of masks other than anecdotal evidence (as you provided). Those societies above did a lot of testing and contact tracing which reduced COVID incidence.

Masks are now semi-mandatory in parts of Italy. For good reason. You're very right; stopping (asymptomatic) spread more valuable to hospitals than a few masks.

Semi-mandatory lol. You realize mandatory has an actual definition right? The surgical masks people are wearing have little or no effect since the virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets. They’re not inhaled, people touch infected surfaces and then their eyes, nose or mouth.
