Not wearing masks is exponentially increasing the pileup at the hospitals, putting health care workers more at risk. We can manage the transition through rationing. Everyone would’ve been better off from the start if this had been the recommendation—with rationed distribution.

Social distancing is as safe as a mask is. For n95 masks to be effective you have to be fit tested & taught how to wear it. Otherwise, it's just as effective to wear a homemade mask. HCW can't do social distancing so they need the n95s.

But lack of believable, sensible guidelines is fueling N95 purchases, including incorrect N95s (one with valves.). Also telling people non-fit tested N95s aren't effective is exactly what backfires. Of course they work some. People aren't stupid. Just tell them the HCWs need them
