Anyone thinking regional quarantines will work needs to read this. It just worsens the spread as people flee, and you can't block all roads in a country the size of US. (Also, Italy, too, calamitously dragged its foot on pushing for universal mask wearing as early as possible).https://twitter.com/Atul_Gawande/status/1243880262737563649 …

This, from @HarvardHBS, is the best analysis I've seen on what happened in Italy. https://hbr.org/2020/03/lessons-from-italys-response-to-coronavirus …

One, United States as a country isn't social-distancing anywhere at the level other countries that finally "bent-the-curve" have. Two, all the ones that successfully and dramatically suppressed first wave have: mass testing and universal mask wearing.https://twitter.com/mirandayaver/status/1244004886120816640 …

The curve isn't bending at all in the US. That does NOT mean social distancing isn't working. It means it's taking time to see its effects. This is not the time to relax social distancing measures. It's the time to strengthen them. We need a nationwide #SafeAtHome order. https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1243998677863145473 …

Yep. Japan is screwing everything else but masks. Not testing widely, not isolating. Yet, the population wears masks. I suspect they have more cases than they have confirmed, but they are not Italy. Hospitals aren't overrun. Best example of mask efficacy!https://twitter.com/JamesSurowiecki/status/1244020197759102976 …

Japan did not - and still does not - have mass testing.

What about the risk that, with promotion of mask wearing will come a false sense of security and a reduction of social distancing and self quarantine? (And I’ve worn a mask when out grocery shopping for a month now).

agree. a regular mask is good for protecting others and yourself in case someone out of the blue coughs on you (happened to me, via an open window on the street, was not on purpose). air comes in via the sides though, so need 2 meter distance. hang in there!

You keep talking about universal mask wearing, but there are no masks available to buy or wear, so what difference does it make to keep complaining about it?

supply is not fixed. the economy can be retooled. health care workers, logistics workers, people working in elderly homes, need to be protected. how hard can it be to produce masks and protective clothing? what is this economy good for if it can't do that? need willpower.

I am for unannounced regional quarantine, with the measures to back it up. Huge fines for leaving without permission. We can't count on all people to do the right thing.
