It really is actually. Tons of evidence for universal mask usage among population and tons of evidence for even selective mask usage protecting the wearer/community. It's weird but "the WHO is of course right internet rando with finger swipe is an idiot" doesn't work here.

Having lived in Italy & Japan, it's too simplistic to point to just mask wearing as the key differentiator. Between bowing vs. Hugging/kissing/hand shaking, mostly single story buildings built almost entirely post-1945 vs. Some of the oldest, densest architecture in the

I can't think of two cultures more diametrically opposed in terms of predilection to social distancing. Plus, again, the decision to hide figures so they could hold the olympics was historically stupid. Japan's numbers will not fare well.
