It really is actually. Tons of evidence for universal mask usage among population and tons of evidence for even selective mask usage protecting the wearer/community. It's weird but "the WHO is of course right internet rando with finger swipe is an idiot" doesn't work here.

See this thread, but there is an enormous amount of evidence at this point, and yes, WHO is so wrong that the internet rando with a touchscreen can spot it. It's a respiratory disease with asymptomatic spread. WHO is basically telling us Saddam has WMD.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1243312116809052172 …

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepThey got together in March! They all washed their hands. They sat apart. Nobody had symptoms. They didn’t wear masks. It’s a respiratory disease with asymptomatic spread. Our denial here is increasingly at anti-vaxer level. https://twitter.com/ByMikeBaker/status/1243308477327405056 …Show this thread1 reply 3 retweets 29 likes -

Replying to @BeWaterInHK @MattBors
Of course. Every country that had a measure of success defies the WHO nonsense and mandates mask wearing, either legally or culturally. That's why the rando with the finger chart works (China is the only one outside the finger chart because of initial screwup but it also works).

Your logic is bad here. First, do you have any evidence mask wearing was significantly higher other than “it seemed like it was”, and second, you don’t think there were other significant factors about differences in those countries’ responses?

Yes, duh to first. Google is your friend! The other is a non-sequitur.

You’re really mixing correlation and causation there, then, on both points.

Lol. Now this is a case of an Internet rando who thinks they sound smart but aren’t. I am not mixing correlation and causation, thank you. There are decades of studies.

As opposed to a journalist who doesn’t specialize in health at all claiming they know what’s better for public health than the WHO? What’s your rational explanation for why they’d recommend against masks if it was indeed best practice and evidence-based?

See this thread, starting with my NYT op-ed. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1243547033430089730 … Sometimes, it's the top authority that's wrong and spreading misinformation. (Just like how Saddam didn't have WMDs.) Yes, it makes the world messy and very hard to judge.
