I was thinking this too, but @zeynep makes a convincing case that seems to cite credible scientific evidence. I'd like to see a formal response from someone at who tbh

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepFor the@nytimes, I wrote about why health authorities telling people they didn't need masks, and, besides they wouldn't wear them right, misfired and maybe even fueled hoarding. There will be many painful truths, and we need to learn to talk about them. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/opinion/coronavirus-face-masks.html … pic.twitter.com/vBhEbS2rJkShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Replying to @notkavi @kavikavigupta and
The difference with washing hands wrong is that when you wear masks you often keep touching your face *more* and a lot of folks don’t recognize how to keep the PPE from getting infected. If you contaminate a mask and put it right against your face then it’s a lot worse.

You're making stuff up, literally. We have tons of field evidence. I know, official sources also say stuff like this, but this claim just doesn't have any evidence among the population. There is evidence of incorrect doffing being a source of infection.. in medical setting.

Defensive much? This is literally what experts have been saying, so you don’t have to accuse *me* of making stuff up when I respond to a point of disanalogy in the above screenshot. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/02/29/health/coronavirus-n95-face-masks.amp.html …pic.twitter.com/pWcpte7ZOf

Sorry, you are right that it's understandable—experts are misinforming us. But there really isn't any evidence of harm to mask use among the population. It doesn't even make sense. So your hand is infected and then you adjust your mask and what? Still better than no mask.

Again, there is medical settings (high viral load, dangerous stuff) where failure to doff correctly leads to infection (in SARS for example) but even there, it was a zillion gazillion times better than no mask.
