Sorry, you are right that it's understandable—experts are misinforming us. But there really isn't any evidence of harm to mask use among the population. It doesn't even make sense. So your hand is infected and then you adjust your mask and what? Still better than no mask.

Again, there is medical settings (high viral load, dangerous stuff) where failure to doff correctly leads to infection (in SARS for example) but even there, it was a zillion gazillion times better than no mask.

I mean it does make sense, in that if you contaminate something and hold it against your face for an extended period of time it is definitely worse than not holding a contaminating thing against your face.

So how is it contaminated? Option one, you're already infected but don't know it. In which case, everyone should wear masks. Option two, your hand touched something infected and then you adjusted your mask. Much better than touching face directly. Then everyone should wear masks.
