Yep. Lack of reflection among media and pundits that made all this so much worse is mindblowing. All of February, I watched people locally use those “what about the flu/travel bans don’t work/don’t overreact” articles to decide go on trips and conferences.https://twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/status/1242647591990562816 …

I'm mostly agreeing with you, and don't think simply pointing out that NYC has some legit physical and cultural aspects in terms of density/disease transmission that would result in rapid virality puts me in the same league as antivaxxers, that's kind of a weird thing to say.

While HK is more dense than NYC area has more people, and three mayor international airports. 24k international flights per month or 3 million passengers international passengers per month. There are 6 million domestic pass. per month. It was a wildfire waiting to happen.

People have to be connected to feel others' pain. Otherwise, Wuhan simply doesn't exist in their minds. If you relatives in those places (Taiwan, etc.) it's far more real. It's an empathy thing.
-
Absolutely. I don't know anyone in those places so I pay them less attention. (being honest) It's how humans are, & it's a problem. I have relatives in various (other) parts of the globe—Seems outrageous when it's YOUR ppl affected by disaster, but then easy to dismiss strangers.
