Some evidence from Hong Kong that paper towel outer layer and 3-ply soft tissue inner layer may be an acceptable *and* disposable replacement for surgical masks—perhaps with a plastic folder face shield. Can people with access to labs pleeease test this?🙏https://www.consumer.org.hk/ws_en/news/2020/covid-19-diymasks …pic.twitter.com/RFKVsPUqMJ

The article is from February 5, but at this point, tweeting it out like this goes in the same folder as the WMD lies about Iraq. I don't know how else to put it. We have solid evidence of asymptomatic spread, thus obvious need for universal mask wearing. https://twitter.com/latimes/status/1242123442712907781 …?

South Korea and Italy had near-concurrent outbreaks that initially followed a parallel, terrifying trajectory. Mere weeks later, as Italy reports 793 deaths in one day, Korea has two. Some days it has *zero*. Me and Choe Sang-Hun report how they did it: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/world/asia/coronavirus-south-korea-flatten-curve.html …

8/ Masks were a whole different ball game as well. Everyone wore masks. Part of this was to prevent transmission. But part of it was also to reduce stigma against the sick. If only the sick wear masks, they may be hesitant. But if everyone does, then no one is missed.

Future generations will be driven batty by the amount of concern over contamination from cardboard boxes—a tail risk: porous surface, exponential decay—compared with protecting the pathways to OUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM WITH MASKS FOR A RESPIRATORY ILLNESS WITH ASYMPTOMATIC SPREAD.🤬

The Czech Republic converted, quickly, to universal mask wearing, including home-made masks as necessary about a week ago. There is an asymmetry between what you need to protect yourself vs. what you can do to protect others. Health care workers are appealing to the public to donate their masks, especially N95 types, which are pointless without eye protection. You really need to address this.

I address it all in my piece. Donate extra N95s. Masks aren't pointless without eye protection. That's another piece of misinformation floating out there. Eye protection is good, especially for hcws exposed to higher loads all day, but this is still a RESPIRATORY DISEASE.Mask up!

Correct me if I am wrong, but if someone coughs or sneezes near you, it is just as likely to go into your eye as your nose. That's a direct line into your nasopharyngeal passage, no? That's why you are not supposed to rub your eyes.

Also, they should donate ALL of their N95 masks, not just extras. It's a bit jarring to see people wearing them on strolls in Central Park when I'm sure they understand that health care workers are in critical need of them.
