Dude says if I were so smart, I would have written all this before but now I'm just signaling. So I wrote an article for Scientific American explaining all this in February—likely one of the first if not first instance of "flatting the curve" explained in a traditional outlet.https://twitter.com/jmrphy/status/1242961435665125376 …

love this genre of day-late & dollar-short face-saving by media/humanities scholars. 'we totally dropped the ball cuz we don't has science but if I'm the first to say this then... i science!' https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1242426243909332993 …

I have threads going back to early January explaining all this (getting more desparate into February) and yeah calling for all that. I wrote all that in long-form too back then. I guess I'm lacking something that makes me credible but what? Hmmm.🤔https://twitter.com/akarve/status/1242968605249028096 …

Agreed. And anyone claiming today that we had months to prepare must produce evidence that they personally sounded the alarm for tests, ventilators, and social distancing whenever, according to them, we were supposed to start preparing.

So @jmrphy I'll go find my January threads for you later but gotta go live on @chrislhayes show soon. I also just wrote an op-ed for the NYT challenging both CDC and the WHO on the science of masks, and I'm right. I'll get back to this later, mr. a day-late and a dollar-short.

But everything in that @theAtlantic article is stuff I have been actively writing about for months in public venues. I can't solve chips on other people's shoulders. (Always the dilemma: either I produce receipts, which I find annoying, or some dude who can't google snarks.)

Anyway, thanks everyone for the nice feedback for #inners. I've done interviews from abroad, on shaky connections, from middle of protests, tear gas whizzing past and all, but first time I did TV from home. It was terrifying! I was just hoping not to become a meme.

I'm just going to leave a few threads here and in the next tweet, and then some of my long-form work on this in the tweet after that. And then I'm done here. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1220060968299966464 … https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1226993681116299265 … https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1223642155949993986 …https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1228707198265634818 …

The point is that is within the realm of the possible—downside threat of a novel coronavirus just isn't comparable to an established one like the seasonal flu (as unfortunate as its regular toll may be).

Another thread on why flu comparisons are so misguided. Seasonal flu/pneumonia has a 0.014% death rate in the US, and still is a huge burden. SARS had a 10% fatality rate. A significant number of COVID-19 patients need hospitalization to survive. Where do you put millions? https://twitter.com/tony_zy/status/1229070516285329408 …

Okay I'm bored with this. @jmrphy says he left academia to research and teach—too bad he didn't learn to google before leaving.
