Um, okay but.. that's not an observational or experimental study, it's a model. Why on earth people changing their minds from a model (models can be great; models can be bullshit) when there is tons of actual high-quality evidence and studies? @politicalmath @antoniogm
(Also, besides the shortage, I think N95 use as everyday protection has genuine issues—it really is less comfortable so much more likely for people to pull it aside etc. In Hong Kong, they don't even use N95s for medical workers routinely—only for real risk, like intubation).
Japan's relatively lower and flatter case curve remains unexplained then?
Japan isn't testing widely so it's an open question where they really are, but clearly they are not Italy or US. So masks almost certainly help there, too.
Also, most people in Japan are not wearing N95 masks (at least they weren't last time I was there). They wear much more comfortable masks that don't keep the virus out, but do (I imagine) reduce the amount of aerosolized saliva that the emit into the air.
Hong Kong health care providers (Hong Kong has been through SARS; they do not mess around) do not wear N95 outside of genuine high-risk procedures like intubation, and SARS meta-review etc. conclusion surgical masks are fine. I explicitly don't recommend N95 in general.
(Also N95 has a stronger case of misuse potential, they are genuinly uncomfortable over time. So not necessary in general and overkill plus bigger downside).
finally I'm catching on that this thread is about a specific type of mask, not masks in general
