Um, okay but.. that's not an observational or experimental study, it's a model. Why on earth people changing their minds from a model (models can be great; models can be bullshit) when there is tons of actual high-quality evidence and studies? @politicalmath @antoniogm

I think that has been factually concluded, just waiting for the admission. I wrote about it weeks ago, for the NYT no less, and expected big backlash. Nope. No backlash from doctors or epidemiologists, but many privately contacting me to say thank you.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1239903421970501640 …
zeynep tufekci added,
(TBH I was a bit wary but felt I had to write as loudly as possible given the stakes. I braced for the onslaught. I waited for people to find studies I had missed. Something I hadn't considered... Anyway, there is only one truth, especially for surgical masks: don't have enough).
Yeah, that part is obvious. Basically the most overt pushback I got was "misinformation" expert who tried a pretzel-argument that it was harmful (touch your face more and/or false sense of security and/or improper wear) but it was so stupid that she went back to subtweeting me.
Almost all the arguments about people don't do it right or false security apply to hand-washing more, and masks are quite likely more effective than handwashing (that's what a SARS review found, though both are necessary obviously).
Obvious point that nobody can really deny is that given asymptomatic transmission and limited testing, the only way is universal masking. And given how culture works, even if we had perfect testing and zero asymptomatic transmission, no way can we only tell the sick to mask up.
Even weirder is the comparative concern over surface transmission. Such tail risk. Viral load decay is exponential and surface to mouth is a long way. But fine, sanitize surfaces let boxes wait. BUT IT'S A RESPIRATORY DISEASE. We are bleach wiping cardboards but masks don't work?
I've gotten less patient over time given the stakes. Still many "experts" can't wrap their heads around authorities or their messaging being wrong... Can't distinguish between idiot misinformation and genuine fact-based calling out of falsehoods.
Folly, thou conquerest, and I must yield!
