NEW: Sunday 22 March update of our coronavirus mortality trajectories tracker • US has recorded 100 deaths *so far* since Saturday — already its highest daily total • UK & US well beyond death tolls when many countries locked down Live version here: https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441 …pic.twitter.com/XNcGYKjcpy

Latest case trajectories for major countries: • Extensive testing in NY sends US case count soaring • Italy-scale outbreaks remain inevitable for most countries. Test-and-trace is essential, everywhere. • Read more about flattening curves in Asia: https://www.ft.com/content/e015e096-6532-11ea-a6cd-df28cc3c6a68 …pic.twitter.com/eJ1dIetnwL

And here’s our chart showing case trajectories in countries whose outbreaks began more recently. We now have more than 30 countries with three-digit case counts, and some curves are alarmingly steep Live versions of all charts here: https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441 …pic.twitter.com/NTdNMwR6Bd

You can also see in many of these charts that the virus seems to spread more slowly in hotter and or more humid countries. This matches the findings of a new paper out of MIT: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3556998 …

Here's my explainer on why we're using log scales:https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1237748598051409921 …

I’m no epidemiologist, but I am a #dataviz specialist, so here are some thoughts on coronavirus and log scales: 1) In the initial outbreak phase, a virus like this spreads exponentially not arithmetically, i.e a log scale is the natural way to track the spread https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1237737352879112194 …

And why we're showing absolute numbers rather than population-adjusted rates:https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1238914490772701185 …

      John Burn-Murdoch added,

      John Burn-MurdochVerified account @jburnmurdoch
And here’s why these numbers aren’t adjusted for population: Normalised numbers are good at showing *relatively* how much strain a country is under, but they’re unsuited to tracking the extent/state of a country’s outbreak, which spreads at ~same pace regardless of country size.

Finally, a request: Can different countries’ healthcare bodies agree on some consistency in recording covid-19 deaths? Sure, countries chan choose their own headline indicator, but if all could also publish "deaths where covid-19 was a factor", that would be enormously helpful.

I think these charts are amazing and have become the standard we all refer to for a reason, and thank you for doing other individual countries, too. Thank you!

At first I thought this too but I don't think it tells us enough about spread. If your country is increasing linearly in the figure with total cases, the graph is only measuring your test rate. See this figure from China data (JAMA). This is new cases every day, not total cases.pic.twitter.com/ifkke1JusS

To clarify, new cases (from tests) are increasing linearly - shown in orange (what we measure). They looked back on the data recorded by doctors about the start of the onset of symptoms - blue bars - which increases exponentially. This is what is so dangerous #COVIDー19
