So people make bad judgments about risk, & as a result we tend to make bad judgments about how to reduce our risk. For example, re. gun violence prevention, we tend to over-focus on assault weapons, which cause less than 1% of annual gun deaths.https://twitter.com/rvawonk/status/1000144356660084736?s=21 …

So the point here is that all of us suck at accurately perceiving personal risk, but most aren’t aware of it. That’s why you see people walking around grocery stores with masks on, thinking they’re reducing their risk of
#coronavirus — b/c, intuitively, it *feels* like they are.17 replies 37 retweets 187 likesShow this thread -
Right now, people don’t seem to be internalizing (or hearing?) the potential personal risk of wearing masks to run errands & do everyday activities. Most, I think, understand that they’re contributing to a shortage — but most aren’t seeing that there’s a personal risk to *them*.

So help make sure your family & friends understand why masks aren’t recommended for everyday use by the avg person, outside of medical settings. There are exceptions, of course — e.g., severely immunocompromised persons — but that’s true all the time, not just b/c of

Thought so. I have a few masks from December when I got a bad cold while visiting elderly relatives. I will continue to wear when I occasionally have to go out. I also have two N95s left from a painting project and plan to donate those...

Yes, please do donate to healthcare workers! Will be much appreciated. By the way, it's possible to sterilize and reuse even disposable masks—even that is better than no mask. (Because of the shortage that's being done in lots of places. Even cloth masks are better than none).
