I honestly think we need a nationwide public education campaign to help people understand why they should stop buying masks to wear to run errands. You’re not helping anyone, including yourself, by doing that, & you’re contributing to a critical shortage among healthcare workers.

The conflation of the shortage with a discussion of health benefits is fallacious.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

The question isn't "are masks harmful?", but rather, "under the current conditions, does population-wide mask-wearing confer more benefit than risk?" The answer to that question, at least right now, is yes. Nothing is completely harmless; that's why we assess harm vs. benefits.
-
There's always some incident of someone choking on a mask or having a fatal allergic reaction. That's harm. But does it outweigh the benefits? Probably not. What about if a small % of mask-wearing ppl accidentally increase their risk by improper use? Does that outweigh benefits?

We need to teach people how to use them properly. Also gloves. Once I saw a blood draw technician drop a bunch of gloves on the floor and pick them up and stuff them back into the box.
-
We should teach people how to make cotton masks and/or make and sell them. And keep N95 masks for physicians and fine bearers of N95 masks outside of hospitals and doctors as long as they are in shortage.

Then f*cking make and sell reusable cotton masks for the general public and make the FFP2/N95 only for the physicians and medics. Eveyone caught with a FFP2/N95 mask should be fined with a harsh fine.

It’s not airborne. Masks offer most folks in public VERY LIMITED PROTECTION at best, from random spittle/sputum launched directly in the face, while leaving their eyes, necks, hands, hair, etc. accessible to the virus. Med pros use face shields and gowns to cover other areas.
-
My dude, masks protect others from you. This epidemic has a significant asymptomatic component. Universal mask societies are the only ones to manage any control over this.
