When and if we get through this mask shortage, we will almost certainly have to get used to universal mask usage as we relaxed the lockdown. In this current unfortunate messaging will hurt us very much in the long run because it is not correct.

We’ve seen Chinese helpers straight up tell Italy to start wearing masks. All the Asian countries that have already got it under control are looking at European countries without a prevalence of mask-wearing with disbelief.

There’s also evidence showing that asymptomatic individuals are responsible for the majority of transmission. Masks, even if imperfect, can help with risk reduction and mitigation.

Of course. (It's hard to realize and accept that we've been misled.)

The question isn't "are masks harmful?", but rather, "under the current conditions, does population-wide mask-wearing confer more benefit than risk?" The answer to that question, at least right now, is yes. Nothing is completely harmless; that's why we assess harm vs. benefits.
-
The answer this is a loud and clear yes, except for the shortage. What on earth is the harm from mask wearing compare to the obvious and clearly demonstrated benefits of universal mask wearing in an epidemic with asymptomatic transmission.
