Plus, please not the recommendation in that Lancet article. "Perhaps it would also be rational to recommend that people in quarantine wear face masks if they need to leave home for any reason, to prevent potential asymptomatic or presymptomatic transmission". Which is the point.

I'm just putting the last paragraph of that Lancet article here. Wear masks every time you go out. Wear masks if you are older or vulnerable. Universal mask wearing recommended as soon as supplies are enough. That's the message. Not "you'll do it wrong" or "it's harmful."pic.twitter.com/vXgAnvqKjJ

The evidence supports it on a population basis in the US? Or the evidence suggests it has been helpful in other countries affected by coronavirus? Many of those countries already have a culture that is more accepting of mask-wearing, and it’s not so novel in many of those places.

As more and more people become infected, mask wearing will help prevent those people from spreading it to others. In other words, it doesn’t directly protect the uninfected, but it limits the infected from exposing others.
