I honestly think we need a nationwide public education campaign to help people understand why they should stop buying masks to wear to run errands. You’re not helping anyone, including yourself, by doing that, & you’re contributing to a critical shortage among healthcare workers.

When and if we get through this mask shortage, we will almost certainly have to get used to universal mask usage as we relaxed the lockdown. In this current unfortunate messaging will hurt us very much in the long run because it is not correct.
-
If/when universal mask-wearing is recommended, it will be because the environment/characteristics of the outbreak have changed in a way that makes wearing masks more advantageous than not wearing them. But that’s not where we are at the moment.

Yes, I know this. I have a background in public health, so that’s where I’m approaching this from. The problem is that masks are rarely worn or used as they’re designed, when they’re used by the average person outside of healthcare settings.

You also have a background in misinformation.

Masks can give people a false sense of security. Social distancing does not require fit testing.

Chinese medical team incredulous when they arrived in Italy and saw no one with a mask among the public. In China it’s a sign of respect to wear one (and seen as a necessity). In western individualistic nations, people suspect you’re a carrier.

Thank you,
@zeynep, for speaking up for the truth! All the countries that have successfully suppressed the virus have heavily promoted, if not required, public use of masks.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
