Dr. Li was visited by the police and given a warning. He was not arrested. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51364382 …

Others were arrested, see thread. The official CCP paper says they were arrested. Dr. Li was threatened with arrest. The reason many healthcare workers got infected at first is the lack of PPE. Read the pieces I linked to. Authorities had a 40K person potluck in Wuhan on JAN 18!

Instead of listening to the doctors, isolating the first few cases, having everyone wear proper protections in the hospitals, they kept things going as usual, threatening and carrying out arrests till January 20th. It was too late by then. How can we erase that?

The GlobalTimes tweet you screenshotted links to this article, which only mentions that rumors were being spread online. Where is your source that doctors were arrested? https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1175369.shtml …

the initial response to COVID-19 was what we can expect from bureaucrats who aren't necessarily healthcare providers. it surely isn't perfect but the response that came afterwards was swift and thorough. it bought the world a ton of time.

Threaten doctors with arrest, hide human-to-human transmission and hold giant banquets are not just bureaucratic hiccups. They did leap to action after Jan 20, finally, as the epidemic would devastate them, too. But too late to stop the pandemic. It was possible in December.

I think we should honor the massive sacrifices of tens or even hundreds of millions of people in China. Not the authorities who brought this on all of us.

Yes they took action when sufficient evidence gave cause A few cases of pneumonia does not justify a total shutdown of society. This pandemic was brought to us by biology and the failure of many countries to heed China's warnings. The CCP isn't responsible for other governments.

No they did not take action when they had evidence. They did not have a "few cases of pneumonia." They had a novel coronavirus and they new it—Chinese scientists decoded the genome first week of January. 40K person potluck: January 18. Other governments have other issues.

Politicizing this pandemic as emblematic of an exceptional Chinese incompetence or cruelty does little but scapegoat a disaster that is of many govts' making. I hope you're ready to accept responsibility for the consequences engaging in this rhetoric will have for all of us. Bye!

They lied through SARS, they lied through this one. We barely contained SARS, and only because of luck with clinical symptoms (consistent fever). Denying this reality is a grave disservice to the people of China who suffer the most for these disasters.

around lunar new year, viet people going back to europe were pulled aside at airport because they were suspected virus carriers, but white travellers weren't screened. koreans were denied toilet on airplane with disease as pretext, even if the plane took no other precaution

the western authorities are too racist to handle this issue competently because lol asian problem. and now conveniently, when that bites europe and the US back, china's responsibility is litigated. I know you're well meaning and wish to be nuanced, but this line of talk

Lol disingenuous people like you just want to make shit up and point fingers when your own country's going through an epidemic. China notified the WHO in early January and locked down an entire province a few weeks later
