This may be hard to hear but let me say it while things are still early. Maybe we'll get lucky with seasonality, immunity and antivirals. But a year or more of hardship is not implausible. "Flatten the curve" is about the immediate crisis. A difficult year will still be ahead.

I'm saying all this partly because I'm afraid the short-term messaging will make the long-term harder. Managing expectations and realism is one key to resiliency! To end, here's a baby sea otter from Monterey Bay. (I love that place, looking forward to visiting again!)pic.twitter.com/i06O7wvYel

Oh they most definitely will. People want to think it'll be over in a few weeks because it's too upsetting to consider the alternative.

Your exhortations in Feb made me a believer, & I in turn tried to convince others, including my students. I started social distancing & went into self-isolation —moving all my classes online— before many. Got some friends to follow suit. So your efforts served some purpose.

Thank you! I have been getting emails etc. from places that shut down and prepared early because of the February sci-am article. Doing a part to help folks be ready is a good way to keep busy!

I can feel you. It is quite draining to deal with loads of people in denial.

Well said. Thank you for candid and calm thoughts. Too many folks, even those closest to me , can't grasp when I sau it's much more than 2 weeks. We'd be EXTREMELY lucky if only 2 months. The duration is quite certain, what lies within ahead depends on how we respond.

Don’t worry, when local hospitals overflow people will process how serious this is.

Oh my freaking gods yes, the "what about the flu" crowd was tedious. They've come around though.

I'm expecting them to morph into the public health skeptic equivalent of all the armchair IT bozos who say the absence of Y2K issues proves that risk was overblown, too ignorant to appreciate the billions of dollars and millions of person hours spent to minimize it.

Thank you so much for your frank and honest analysis. I've relied on your rational voice for sound analysis in a lot of areas for many years, and it provides comfort to me without false and superficial hope.
