There's a role for someone to emerge as the world's leading interpreter of coronavirus statistics. You see a lot of data reported in real time (e.g.(https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries …) but not always obvious what's "real" and what's an artifact of insufficient testing/underreporting etc.

p.s. This almost certainly has to be someone with domain knowledge, i.e. a practicing epidemiologist or a journalist who has reported extensively on medical statistics. On the off-chance 538 is the right venue for this, drop us a line, tho this something you could do on your own.

This isn't a person, though. It's the process. Any attempt to be the authoritative person is probably harmful at this point.

Fair, but there's a lot of room for someone diving into the nuances of testing, the likelihood of uncounted cases (without irresponsible guesses), the sources of existing cases, the extent containment success through lockdown, hospital bed occupation rates, etc.

We need the process. "Someone" will have all the wrong incentives.
