The extremely decisive moves taken today in all the US states with major outbreaks seems like really good news.

I keep seeing things saying we are where Italy was ten days ago, but it feels like the big difference is we're actually learning from Italy and doing things they didn't do ten days ago, etc.

Yes although it’s not clear exactly where we are in the curve because testing is so bad.

They shut down Wuhan when they had 41 deaths and about 1000 known cases. Then they got slammed—while everyone was basically under house arrest. On the other hand the US is not as dense as China or Europe. I think we’re teetering between terrible but manageable and catastrophe.

They had the 40K banquet on the 19th, Xi addressed the nation on the 20th, Wuhan shut down announced 23rd (2 am iirc). So the banquet had no time to have an impact on anything measurable. Keep in mind that deaths took about four week, and first deaths occurred in early January.

Right. They had 1000 known cases, probably 10x real cases. But key point is the shut down in Wuhan did not stop them from getting slammed the month after that, but did stop the month after that.
