The extremely decisive moves taken today in all the US states with major outbreaks seems like really good news.

I keep seeing things saying we are where Italy was ten days ago, but it feels like the big difference is we're actually learning from Italy and doing things they didn't do ten days ago, etc.

Yes although it’s not clear exactly where we are in the curve because testing is so bad.

They shut down Wuhan when they had 41 deaths and about 1000 known cases. Then they got slammed—while everyone was basically under house arrest. On the other hand the US is not as dense as China or Europe. I think we’re teetering between terrible but manageable and catastrophe.

From what I've read though, the deaths were probably very underreported, because the hospitals were already overwhelmed when the shutdown happened? Or did I misunderstand that?

They were already slammed, somewhat but China is dense! We have a lot more ICU beds by any measure. Plus men smoke more etc. Even with under reporting, say 400 deaths (10x underreporting). Die was cast by then for Wuhan for the next month, but they stopped the month after that.
