The most popular topic on my Facebook feed, cutting across “random people I went to grammar school with” and “serious vulnerability researchers”, is the conspiracy theory that everyone needs to be wearing masks but they’re not telling you that because there’s a shortage.

That's the thing, it really needs to be universal. It's doing no good if you're the only one with a mask, because there's more vectors than just breathing it in. So until there's enough supply, leave it for those who need it the most.

Of course given where we are, we need to leave it for healthcare workers—but the shortage is one key reason why we can’t recommend universal mask wearing.

I’m not really analyzing it that carefully beyond “I’ll do what doctors say I should do and think it is weird that vuln researchers are trying to overrule them”.
-
