Incredible, even though I have so little expectation. Musk's theory must be public health professionals and epidemiologists with all their education and statistics training are completely unaware of all these considerations, and are just "panicking" because they're all dumb.pic.twitter.com/DGAXguBjzj

For the record, every public health professional an epidemiologist knows these points and a lot more. What Musk doesn’t know is that the gravity of the situation is there despite evolving CFR and R0 calculations (which are dynamic and based on systemic response anyway).

People can go up this thread—stuff so many public health experts have been explaining for months now. The issue isn’t just CFR or R0. This coronavirus requires weeks of ICU to survive, is already spreading locally, we don’t have capacity and aren’t ready.https://twitter.com/jeremykonyndyk/status/1236704489568075776 …

And this is why public health folks in your twitter feed are freaking out, and why the US testing debacle is so extraordinarily damaging. We lost 6-7 weeks of potentially triggering earlier action, because lack of testing made us blind. https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/1235994748005085186?s=20 …

The fatality rate may be overestimated, but if we make that an excuse to ignore the contagion and risk, we will raise the absolute numbers so much that even a very low fatality rate will add up to hundreds of thousands, maybe more, avoidable deaths of people, not numbers.

Tell that to the media. Reality is that "fatality figures" sell more copies of your product than statistics on contagion and risk vectors. And so that's where a lot of media outlets focus(ed) their attention. Rather than providing accurate and verified data.

He gets it completely wrong. Covid19 is not a common cold, and prevalence of the 4 common cold viruses has nothing to do with this new more serious virus which is not yet endemic. Of course, he knows this, and is, effectively, lying.

The most critical thing we can do is slow this virus down, so that the effect on hospitals/economies can be staggered, and supportive care can be offered. This will save many, many lives, in the real live, unsimulated, bonafide, world. 🌎
