Strikes me that the shortage of testing capacity is a more fundamental problem than mask supply. If people could readily disambiguate symptoms from the common cold then tested and self-quarantined would not be such active vectors. But the tests in the US have been royally botched

I think the overwhelmed component is important - exhaustion made them more likely to have the shock reaction to getting sick, which is why you've seen 29 year old doctors die. Full PPE is just tough to wear day in day out unfortunately
