I guess more people are paying attention to COVID-19 now because of this. A little too late, unfortunately. The die is mostly cast. Those early "but the flu!" dismissals were so frustratingly misplaced. Opposite of needless panic isn't downplaying of real threats.https://twitter.com/michaelbatnick/status/1233054382796804096 …

What would have been the benefit of those people paying attention to it, say, three weeks earlier?

Not three weeks! I ordered masks/supplies on Jan 7! We knew of the need to start thinking about readiness by the first week of January and go into full prep mode by Jan 21st. Speed up testing infrastructure, prepare for supply chain disruptions; start training front line folks...

Earlier response would have slowed spread and flatten curve. With any luck, this thing is seasonal. Many places will get hit now with no plan or stocks in place, or at least a plan to move stocks properly...

I can't imagine an earlier response in the US being any more effective unless it was coordinated from the top with the full support of the government, which is an impossibility given the people in charge. Maybe I'm wrong and regional planning is more effective than I think?

I agree. It would have had to be a FEMA-led effort with significant support from the WH. IMO, a good chunk of the comparisons to flu were efforts to prevent stateside xenophobia that affects Asians/Asian-Americans, esp. in light of the foreign policy fights b/w China and the US

Yeah but the way to address xenophobia is not to spread more misinformation though. If you don’t acknowledge the issue that’s right in front of peoples noises, it just makes xenophobia or other scapegoating dynamics just stronger.

Do you think this is a gap in the meaning of “flu”? I feel like in public health flu == millions of deaths a year + multiple pandemic prep, and not business as usual. Public understanding aside, would resources in public health been more activated by not comparing to flu?

It’s not entirely clear to me why labs, public health officials, testing response would have been any less (or any less botched) were messaging not compared to the flu, considering these are people who fully understand what flu can do

Yes, it was absolutely incorrect and harmful to invoke the flu comparison except to say please get a flu shot because everything is worse if you *also* get the flu. Seasonal influenza is endemic, anticipated and about 200 times less deadly. Plus we have a vaccine and antivirals.

I can definitely see how msg could be harmful, but top-down responses aside (like testing, quarantine/cordon, other NPI), wouldn’t individual response exactly be the same? (6 ft, wash hands, don’t touch face) (Also, I thought CFR difference is projected to be ~20x not 200?)

I don’t fundamentally disagree with you btw that existing messaging was ineffective, if not counterproductive! But I just don’t see an obvious “correct” messaging either.
