Millions in China are suffering through severe lockdowns and untold number of medical workers are putting their lives on the line and thus gifting us with time to prepare for a pandemic that will greatly stress our infrastructure. Our lackadaisical approach is unconscionable.

Also, this is the United States so people will rightly have second thoughts about seeking medical attention and potentially being hit with a multi thousand dollar bill

Serious question: As average citizens in the US, what would you recommend doing to prepare? Supplies? General practices?

I am not an expert, but health insurance, reliable car, and food stuffs should be on top of the list. The silver lining of really terrible US public transit system is that people who travel in cars tend not to infect those who travel in other cars. Same with single family homes.
