New piece. Hear me out. What if Xi Jinping didn't even *know* of key details of the coronavirus outbreak until it was too late? What if his authoritarian blindspot was *worsened* by China's use of surveillance and censorship technology? https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/02/coronavirus-and-blindness-authoritarianism/606922/ …pic.twitter.com/Zof3Ct6taI

Yes, it's a bold claim. Do convince me otherwise! China's authoritarianism is important, not just because of the billion-plus who live there—look how it's now mishandled its way into what almost certainly looks like a serious pandemic. (And it may well reshape the US, too. Soon).

I think its definitely astute and an endemic problem that undermines all authoritarian regimes; reporting that everything is fine, every quota was met, dismissing / de-amplifying concerns, creates structural fragility and allows critical threats to develop without being addressed

That is exactly right, and technology helping ratchet up the surveillance makes things worse! More self-censorship means the some breathing mechanisms (rumors that can circulate; trusted informal contacts with locals etc.) that often helps hierarchies course-correct aren't there!

Its also true that China's health infrastructure is not as well developed as the ones in the West that had a hard time managing communication during the SARS crisis - compounds and adds noise as well. Maybe a bit of a perfect storm?

Q: how many hospitals and doctors have you visited in China and which cities? I have some experience after 40+ years 😉 not saying that everything is perfect. Is it in your country? 🤔 my EU country has 100% health insurance covered. China 70-80% rest self pay
