I was in Iowa and watched countless volunteers pour their hearts and souls into the campaigns. The app that failed is by a for-profit tech company founded by "veterans" of the 2016 Clinton campaign. Nothing will get fixed till these people stop failing up.https://twitter.com/ShadowIncHQ/status/1224773800224608257 …

Less apologies, more accountability. There is no other way forward. Many well-meaning experts warned these people, and they chose not to listen—despite many previous examples of similar failures. Imagine all the wasted effort that went into the caucuses.https://twitter.com/ShadowIncHQ/status/1224773799171776517 …

More about the company that developed the app, and why what happened is a symptom of a deep problem rather than just one unlucky incident.

A good thread on campaign tech's structural problems. Media buyers makes tons of money (from commissions) for example, but infrastructure isn't funded properly. Btw, Trump refused media buys (he knows a scam!) and Facebook provided him with infrastructure.https://twitter.com/rabble/status/1224821358699220992 …

I’m trying to imagine a way to make this worse besides announcing partial results, and kind of failing.pic.twitter.com/BMZS4rDXPD

No reason it can't be BOTH arrogance, incompetence, AND a hostile actor.

Exactly. If I’m Putin, what would I pay for a 10% chance of today’s headlines? If you’re developing this app, that has to be among your threat models. If that’s too expensive to defend against, you cannot in good conscience build it. But they did.

Great piece,
@zeynep. re: Nevada, the local party announced this morning that they will not be using the app:https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/nevada-democrats-won-t-use-app-caused-iowa-caucus-fiasco-n1129946 … -
They’d better ask for their money back.
