My garage door used to open on its own sometimes at my old house. It always seemed to be around the time people would be coming home from work, or leaving in the morning. Is this something similar do you think?

You met some programmers? There is no limit to type or length mismatch one can shoot for in that realm. I know of people who used two digit variables for year... into the nineties!

Someone in our neighborhood has a garage door opener that works on our garage. We literally unplug our garage door unless we anticipate using it.
