That there would be fake Airbnb hosts is not “every possible contingency.” Or another example: that Facebook ad targeting tools would be used to restrict employment ads by race gender or age—employment law 101, but it took Propublica to point this out. Buzzfeed on ad scams. Etc.

and we should be grateful for talented jounalists! I think we’re collectively responsible for platforms. Journalists, engineers, (even) politicians are working on the same problems. i dont “blame” companies. theyre doing their best but they cant do it without others

That may be true for surprising or subtle stuff. When we talk about tracking and investigating the most obvious and basic bad actors (like fake hosts!), it's just shrugging off negative externalities until there is a PR issue (and some don't even address it then).
