Tech and Liberty https://stratechery.com/2019/tech-and-liberty/ … The First Amendment is not about a law, but rather a culture — specifically a culture of liberty. It is essential to tech, and in this context, Facebook is mostly right about political ads (but can still do better).

I think the least plausible defense of Facebook's stance is "marketplace of ideas". There is no marketplace of ideas there exactly because of the way it's structured. I wrote about that here:https://www.wired.com/story/free-speech-issue-tech-turmoil-new-censorship/ …

I know! I was referring to your point that they struggle to defend themselves in "light of marketplace of ideas". That's what they do because no real alternative. There is no "against tyranny" defense of amplification or pay-to-play—which is more the problem here, not speech.

If their restrictions are quasi-tyrannical (and I get the arguments) that also means they have an oversized amount of power over speech, which goes to the monopoly argument. If their restrictions don't matter because big-wide-internet, well, then it's not "tyranny" to restrict.

So I'm somewhat agreeing with your final point about the accountability problem, but through a different route.
