NEW piece from me: We're missing the important question about China. The mystery isn't why Apple and NBA are quick to cave but why the Chinese government threw a fit over minor things—and why now? That answer isn't obvious but it's greatly consequential. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/10/why-does-china-care-about-daryl-moreys-hong-kong-tweet/600001/ …pic.twitter.com/OLVmZI6cXr

That's the question! It's a genuine question without an obvious answer to me, and I don't think "just because they can" answers it. There are many instances in the past where they behave differently. What's going on now?https://twitter.com/andersen/status/1184173199954763778 …

In this fascinating piece, @zeynep puts her finger on the biggest mystery about China's actions in recent weeks... Is Xi throwing tantrums out of strength or weakness? https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/10/why-does-china-care-about-daryl-moreys-hong-kong-tweet/600001/ …

Don’t you think it’s connected to strife in HK? Which would indicate weakness, I suppose.

I THINK one aspect is that the playbook worked before (e.g. didn't they do some airlines & hotels), but it may have just blew up in their face between the NBA's cowardly capitulation and South Park going all-in on mockery.

But that should’ve been foreseeable, at least the NBA part blowing up. There’s a lot of research showing they actually understand that stuff very well at least domestically. So why now?

It’s very simple. Trump promised Xi that he would not speak about Hong Kong (in exchange for dirt on Biden’s son). This has emboldened the Chinese to expect they can demand the same from all U.S. Citizens because that’s the way things work in China. #FreeHongKong

#China and #Xi are making a huge mistake if they think they can trust Trump. He will stab them in the back just like everyone else. #FreeHongKong

Because it's now run by a single (insecure, witness the Winnie the Pooh incident) dictator. There's no need for a rational explanation when a nation twists to the whims of a single man.

I wonder too. On the one hand, 'working to the Leader' can explain many things. They may end up standing behind some things they might not have cared to initiate. I recall a PRC delegation trashed the offices of the president of New Guinea a few months ago over some slight. /2

On the other, 'teach the foreign companies a lesson' may simply have popped up on the to-do list.
