The claim from @zeynep and others is that the primary users of this app aren't even protesters, they're people living their day to day lives, trying to avoid being caught up in a dangerous situation.

I'm not claiming you have said anything positive about the PRC police. The problem, as you pointed out earlier, is that Apple may or may not be in a really difficult situation, and we can't actually determine the correct grounds on which to criticize it without clarity.

My concern is that the lack of clarity could be hurting people in Hong Kong. How do we advocate for these people while avoiding the pitfalls of promulgating false information.

I absolutely reject that. When someone makes a wild claim, with no plausible support and when there's a plausible answer (pressured and sucking up) it's not solid "methodology" to give benefit of the doubt to the party making implausible claims and harming people in the process.

With all such questions, deciding to "wait" on something when one side of the answer makes no sense and the other makes a lot of sense (and has facts on its side) is not responsible or cautious methodology, especially as harm is ongoing. No, no, no. Sorry, totally disagree.

I’m going to leave it here, but when one side is making implausible claims and not being transparent, and when there are other clear facts, please wait as long as the interested party making wild claims would like us to wait while harm his ongoing is not defensible. Ongoing harm!
