A friend (actually hacker) once asked over AIM for some money. He gave my address (which he had recently visited) to prove it was him. I probably would have sent money but for some reason he got cold feet. My friend had saved my address alongside my AIM details & then got hacked.

It's amazing to think how much work they'd have to go to in mapping the service interactions for each bank just to make this feel real

Isn’t the best defense to say “OK, I’ll call you right back”—and then doing so?

My CC company is pretty good that way. A robo call or txt message says to contact the security Dept via the phone # on the back of the card. Otherwise I just say "where on your website can I find your number." My Rule of thumb: never answer questions on a call initiated by others

Name, email and phone number are the only 3 pieces of info needed to start this phishing attempt. That info, for me, has been breached at least a dozen known times. Many banks leak info about the existence of an account for a given email address via the password reset procedure.

This is fairly usual phishing in Russia. They usually call from underground call centers (often based in prisons), use caller ID spoofing and often buy user data leaked from major services and banks.

Had a friend subject to this exact scam. Unfortunately, it was successful. Luckily bank was able to reverse it.
